Saturday Rides

National Aquarium

July 26 2008

Today we rode to the Virginia Square metro stop (where we decided to lock up our bikes) and took the metro downtown to the National Aquarium. The group consisted of John, me, and the kids: Richard and Marvin, David, Abbell, the other Marvin, Robel, and Michael. It was Robel's first Saturday ride, and the first one Abbell and David had been on in a long time.

IMG_6355.jpgDavid helped us navigate the metro map, IMG_6361.jpgand Michael and Marvin G. took a little nap on the the way there. IMG_6356.jpgOnce we got to Federal Triangle, we ate a lunch of PB&J sandwiches that we brought (sticky and smushed, but really good) and investigated some trees. IMG_6365.jpg

Abbell was pretty sure the aquarium wouldn't be as good as the one in Baltimore (it took a while to clear up that we weren't actually *going* to Baltimore) but hoped there would at least be a really big fish, maybe even a small shark. Here's what we saw:

Big Shark Not exactly what Abbell hoped for...but still cool. Here are some underwater turtles, and very shy seahorses.

Everyone thought the flat fish was pretty awesome. It starts out as a regular fish, then its eyes shift to one side of it's head. It can change color to blend into the ocean floor, too.
